DFT is still expensive — so we shelf it

Foundation models for chemistry are getting better. Orbitals, solvents, and physics-aware features are back in the conversation. That is good science.

It does not make density functional theory free.

Language models will happily invent a HOMO–LUMO gap. A converged SCF will not. Training labels still cost wall-time, geometry care, and honest method tags.
